Full description
Known as "The Treasure of the Country", Kutná Hora is one of the most important historic towns in Bohemia. On this full-day excursion with a Spanish-speaking guide, discover the impressive Gothic Cathedral of St. Barbara and the mysterious Sedlec Ossuary, with admission included to both sites, listed as UNESCO World Heritage.
Known as "The Treasure of the Country", Kutná Hora is one of the most important historic towns in Bohemia. Once a mining town founded in the 13th century, it contributed much of its silver wealth to the Bohemian Crown.
The excursion departs from the meeting point in Prague at 9:00 AM, with an outbound journey of a little over an hour to reach the town. In the historic centre, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll see the Plague Column, a monument dedicated to victims of epidemics, before heading to the Italian Court —once the Royal Mint and today the town hall— passing the central square, remains of the old town walls and a city gate, from where the Gothic Cathedral of St. Barbara can be seen in the distance.
The route continues past the Church of St. James the Greater, with stories about the legend of the Ruthard family curse, and passes a small fortified tower that once guarded access to the silver mines, now the Silver Museum. Nearby is a public exhibition of sculptural groups reminiscent of Prague's Charles Bridge, facing the former Jesuit College, now home to the Central Bohemian Art Gallery.
The highlight of the tour is the visit inside the Gothic Cathedral of St. Barbara, with admission included. The guided visit continues to a viewpoint, the former synagogue, and the Stone Fountain, a unique Gothic civic monument, ending in front of the Stone House, the town's most distinctive Gothic civic building.
The excursion then moves to the Sedlec district, where you'll visit the Ossuary, located at the centre of a cemetery once considered "holy ground", also with admission included. The Sedlec Ossuary is a monument to victims of epidemics, containing the classified remains of approximately 40,000 people.
The return to Prague is expected at approximately 3:00 PM.
