Discover Irazú Volcano and the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels on a half-day or full-day tour with the Orosi Valley and Lankester Garden.
Enjoy the wonders of nature on this tour to Irazú Volcano, beginning by leaving the Pan-American Highway to ascend towards the volcano, passing through various typical plantations of the region, such as potato, onion, garlic and beet, as well as cattle ranches, with the incomparable view of the Central Valley. As you advance, you'll notice the diversity of microclimates and the changes in vegetation.
Upon reaching the summit, you'll see the main craters, Irazú, Playa Hermosa and Diego de la Haya, and on a sunny, clear day it's possible to spot both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in the distance. This majestic volcano, the highest in Costa Rica at 3,432 metres, had gas and ash eruptions between 1963 and 1965 that affected the entire national territory, still remembered today as the most significant eruptive process. At the summit, you'll discover the fascinating vegetation typical of the area, known as páramo forest.
Half-Day Tour: after the tour of the volcano, the tour descends towards the historic city of Cartago, founded in 1563 by the conquistador Juan Vázquez de Coronado and Costa Rica's capital during colonial times until 1823, to visit the wonderful Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, patron saint of Costa Ricans.
Full-Day Tour: in addition to the volcano and the Basilica, this tour continues to Lankester Garden, a University of Costa Rica research centre that protects more than 800 species of orchids, bromeliads and countless other plant species, and to the Orosi Valley, an area of incomparable beauty where you can visit one of the few remaining colonial churches.
