Enjoy the views of the Aegean Sea from the top of the cape and visit the famous Temple of Poseidon.
We travel 70 km by road, along Poseidon Avenue, passing the residential neighborhoods of the periphery of Athens, Glyfada, Varkiza, etc., until we reach our destination, Cape Sounion, which is located at the southernmost tip of Attica. The small fishing village we see today was once a city with its corresponding port.
At the top of the cliff, which plunges into the Aegean Sea, stands the marble temple that Pericles ordered to be built and which was consecrated to Poseidon (444 BC). Its Doric columns have served for centuries as a reference for ships, and when the British poet Lord Byron engraved his name on one of the 16 columns that still stand today, of the 34 originals, in 1810, he set an unfortunate precedent for vandalism in the temple.
We will enjoy the views of the Aegean Sea and its spectacular sunset from the top of the cape.
