Toledo’s origins date back to Roman times, when it was known as Toletum and the first traces of its civilization were established. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Germanic peoples settled in the region during the 6th century, followed by the Muslim conquest in the early 8th century, which added their own cultural and architectural influences.

With the Christian Reconquest in the 12th century, Toledo became an important center of culture and knowledge.
