Explore the Gaeltacht region of Connemara and enjoy free time to hike Diamond Hill, with stops at Killary Fjord, Leenane and An Spidéal, on a guided tour from Galway.
This guided tour explores the Connemara region departing from Galway, travelling through the heart of the Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking area) and its landscape of mountains, lakes and valleys. The route passes through Oughterard, with views of the River Corrib, and continues to Maam Cross, a key crossroads in the region, where Connemara ponies and sheep can be spotted alongside ancient stone ruins. Along the way, filming locations used in movies such as The Quiet Man, The Field and Marley & Me are also pointed out.
The tour makes a stop of approximately 30 minutes in the village of Leenane, on the shores of Killary Fjord, Ireland's only fjord. Further on, in Connemara National Park, passengers have 2 hours of free time to hike Diamond Hill, with four routes of varying length and difficulty to choose from. Entry to the park is free of charge, and there are tea rooms on site for coffee or a light snack. The bus cannot wait beyond the allotted time, so the hike should be planned accordingly.
After the hike, the route continues to the Killary Fjord overlook, with a stop of approximately 10 minutes, and carries on through the Inagh Valley and Gaeltacht areas such as Camus and Screeb, where the Irish language can still be heard. The final stop is in An Spidéal, a coastal Gaeltacht village, before returning to Galway via Salthill and Barna.
The tour includes a guide throughout the journey and free time for the Diamond Hill hike.
