Explore the real filming locations of the Outlander saga on a full-day trip from Edinburgh, through castles, historic villages and 18th-century Scottish Lowland landscapes.
This full-day excursion travels from Edinburgh to some of the real filming locations of the Outlander saga, based on Diana Gabaldón's novels set in Scotland in 1743, at the dawn of the Jacobite uprisings. The first stop is the village of Falkland, which in the series represents 1940s Inverness and where some of its earliest scenes were filmed; there you can see the Covenanter Hotel, which on screen is Mrs. Baird's Bed and Breakfast.
The next stop is Culross, a 17th-century village of well-preserved stone cottages, dominated by its palace with its distinctive yellow color and the ruins of a Cistercian abbey. Fans of the series will recognize Cranesmuir, the village closest to Castle Leoch, the prosecutor's house where Geillis Duncan lived, and the palace gardens, used as Claire's garden.
The route continues to Linlithgow Palace, one of the main residences of the kings of Scotland in the 15th and 16th centuries and the birthplace of James V and Mary, Queen of Scots, where the lunch stop also takes place. In the series, its facade and corridors represent Wentworth Prison. From there, the tour heads to Blackness Castle, known as "the ship that never sailed", a 15th-century fortification where the exterior of Fort William and the scene in which Jamie Fraser is whipped by Jonathan Randall were filmed.
