Full description
The Croatian Homeland War Tour is a journey through most of the 20th-century history of Croatia and the region.
Starting with World War II, the tour provides a better understanding of the situation in Croatia with special emphasis on the Independent State of Croatia, a fascist country, and the anti-fascist resistance movement.
After the war ended, communist Yugoslavia was founded, with Josip Broz Tito as its leader and Croatia as one of the six federal republics for almost five decades. Learn about Yugoslavia’s domestic policies, foreign affairs, and the figure of Tito.
Following President Tito’s death, Yugoslavia began to collapse with a series of brutal wars in the 1990s. Croatia found its way to independence and democracy through the Homeland War, whose consequences can still be felt in many ways.
The multimedia exhibition provided by the official guide consists of maps, photos, and videos presented in chronological order. The tour includes a visit to World War II underground tunnels built during the fascist regime, later used as public shelters during the Homeland War.
The tour ends in a basement located just two minutes from the main square, where Zagreb citizens hid during air raids and where details of the Homeland War in Croatia are presented.
