General Description
Embark on a captivating guided tour through the stunning West Coast of Rhodes, a journey that brings together ancient heritage, untouched natural landscapes, and rich local culture. This full-day experience unveils the hidden treasures of inland Rhodes with the guidance of a professional local expert, allowing you to explore archaeological wonders, medieval fortresses, traditional mountain villages, and serene natural spots that reveal the island’s authentic soul.
The adventure begins at Ancient Kamiros, one of the most remarkable archaeological sites on Rhodes. Located on the island’s northwest coast near Kalavarda, Kamiros was founded by the Dorians and flourished as a city-state in antiquity. Built across three tiers, the upper level featured the acropolis with the Temple of Athena and a grand stoa. The middle terrace hosted a sophisticated urban layout with parallel streets and residential blocks, while the lower level included a Doric temple, a central fountain square, the agora, and altars dedicated to multiple deities. Inhabited since Mycenaean times, Kamiros is a striking example of ancient urban planning and spiritual life. (Entrance fee required.)
Next, the route leads to the Venetian-era Kritinia Castle, perched high on a hill about 131 meters above sea level. Offering panoramic views over the Aegean Sea, the island of Halki, and several nearby islets, this 16th-century fortress was strategically built by the Knights of Saint John to monitor naval movements and protect against pirates. Though only the outer walls remain, the coats of arms of Grand Masters D’Amboise and Origny still adorn the gate. Inside, you’ll find remnants of a chapel dedicated to Saint John, adorned with impressive 16th-century frescoes.
Continuing inland, the tour arrives at Embonas, a traditional mountain village renowned for its wine and local products. Visitors will enjoy a guided tasting session at one of Rhodes' oldest wineries, sampling a variety of native wines crafted from local vineyards. The tasting also includes traditional liqueurs such as ouzo, souma with honey, mastiha, and pomegranate, accompanied by nuts and fresh fruits. This is also a chance to explore the production of local olive oil and honey, as well as cosmetics and herbs derived from natural ingredients. During free time, visitors can enjoy a traditional meal at a local taverna and browse authentic handmade souvenirs in the village shops.
The journey then climbs to Mount Profitis Ilias, standing at 798 meters and home to unique cultural landmarks. Nestled within a forest of Aleppo pines, cypresses, and cedars, this area was developed by the Italians in 1929 as a mountain resort, with the charming buildings of Elafos and Elafina still standing. It’s an ideal location for photos and a peaceful coffee break. Along the way, travelers can glimpse the abandoned residence of Mussolini, a relic from the World War II era, and visit the Eleousa Fountain — a picturesque, tranquil spot home to the rare Gizani fish, native only to Rhodes and considered a local symbol of resilience.
Further along the mountain road, the tour visits the Fountouklis area, where the Byzantine Church of Saint Nikolaos awaits. Dating from the 14th to 15th centuries, this small domed church is notable for its distinctive square architecture and a beautifully preserved apse adorned with a triple-tier composition of frescoes. These murals reflect the deep spiritual traditions of medieval Rhodes and remain a highlight for lovers of art and history.
The final destination is the renowned Kallithea Springs, situated on the island’s eastern coast. Known since antiquity for the healing properties of its waters, which emerge naturally from the surrounding rocks, Kallithea Springs is a masterfully restored complex that welcomes visitors with its elegant architecture, mosaic designs, and refined landscaping. Guests can stroll through its atmospheric courtyards, explore the historic rotunda, swim in the crystal-clear coves, or enjoy a coffee at the stylish seaside café. The photo gallery offers a glimpse into traditional life in Rhodes, while the site’s grandeur transports visitors to a more nostalgic and romantic era. (Group entrance fee applies.)
This full-day West Coast of Rhodes tour offers an immersive blend of history, nature, and local traditions. From the ruins of Ancient Kamiros to the mountain trails of Profitis Ilias, from Kritinia’s medieval stronghold to the therapeutic calm of Kallithea Springs, each stop is curated to highlight the rich cultural layers and natural beauty that make Rhodes a truly unforgettable destination. Whether you're passionate about archaeology, in search of breathtaking views, or eager to savor local flavors, this guided experience delivers a well-rounded and memorable exploration of the island's western treasures.
