Full description
In the heart of the Montenegrin hills, according to legend, the god Poseidon created a butterfly-shaped bay, a romantic haven where the sensuality and sacred nature of this mythological deity still reside. This magical bay is none other than the famous Bay of Kotor, one of the most iconic landscapes of the Adriatic Sea. A trip along the Montenegrin coast means exploring a mosaic of small, colorful towns, each with its own history, architecture, and traditions that have endured over time.
Among these places is the city of Kotor, considered one of the most mysterious and enchanting gems of the Montenegrin coast. Situated on the shores of a deep bay and surrounded by medieval walls, Kotor offers a spectacular setting, with cobbled streets, centuries-old churches, and an atmosphere that harks back to bygone eras. Throughout the tour of this historic city, its seafaring soul and close connection with the Republic of Venice are revealed, which left a visible mark on its facades and fortifications.
In the Bay of Kotor lies a very unique little island: Gospa od Škrpjela, also known as Our Lady of the Rocks. This artificial island, created from stones thrown into the sea along with the remains of ancient shipwrecks, houses a 17th-century church that houses religious paintings, tapestries, and valuable historical artifacts. To reach it, it is possible to hire a boat service from various points along the coast. There are multiple sea transfer providers offering different types of boats.
The tour becomes even more fascinating with a stop in Perast, a charming and protected town for its enormous historical and architectural value. This small settlement, considered a true open-air museum, stands out for its Baroque palaces, ornate churches, and quiet streets that evoke eras of commercial and maritime splendor. Located off Perast are two islands that capture the attention of every visitor: the naturally occurring, cypress-covered island of St. George (Sveti Juraj), and the artificial island of Gospa od Škrpjela. Both can be visited via a short boat trip, adding a unique experience to a visit to this Adriatic region.
After this cultural and scenic immersion, the return from the Bay of Kotor takes place along a panoramic road that borders the calm waters of Boka Kotorska Bay, offering spectacular views of the Montenegrin coastline. This route continues until reaching the crossing point where a ferry can be boarded to cross the bay to the other shore. From there, the journey continues by road, passing through towns such as Herceg Novi, a coastal city with a Venetian soul, to continue towards the border between Montenegro and Croatia.
The final stretch of the route follows the Croatian coast, passing through the Dubrovnik Riviera, an area renowned for its Mediterranean landscapes, picturesque villages, and proximity to one of the most visited destinations in the Adriatic. This section, which connects Montenegro with Dubrovnik, allows you to appreciate the contrast between two neighboring cultures while enjoying a continuous landscape of sea, mountains, and coastal fortresses.
This trip along the Montenegrin coast, with visits to Kotor, Perast, and the islands in the bay, is an unforgettable experience that combines history, nature, and legends in a setting that seems frozen in time. Ideal for those looking to explore the essence of the Adriatic beyond the conventional routes, this tour offers an in-depth look at the maritime traditions and unique architecture that define this part of the Balkans
