Full description
Discover the majesty of Venice like few others can with an exclusive after-hours tour of St. Mark’s Basilica and, optionally, the Doge’s Palace. This small-group guided experience offers a rare opportunity to explore two of Venice’s most iconic landmarks after the daytime crowds have dispersed. With your expert local guide, gain privileged insight into the history, art, and intrigue that shaped the heart of the Venetian Republic.
Begin your journey in the famed St. Mark’s Square, where you’ll meet your guide beside the statue of the winged lion—symbol of Venice. From there, enjoy skip-the-line entry into the Doge’s Palace just as its doors close to the public. As the seat of Venetian power for centuries, this Gothic masterpiece was once home to the Doge and the political elite of the Republic. Step inside lavish chambers adorned with opulent decoration, including the Hall of the Great Council, one of the largest rooms in Europe, decorated with grand frescoes by Veronese and Tintoretto.
As you explore the palace, your guide will reveal fascinating stories behind the artwork and architecture. Learn why one Doge is painted with a black veil, uncover the secretive election process that selected Venice's dukes, and delve into the day-to-day workings of the Venetian government. Venture into the armory, where ancient weapons are still on display, and descend into the eerie prison cells that once held some of Venice’s most notorious criminals. Walk across the Bridge of Sighs and discover the poignant truth behind its name—a far cry from its romantic reputation.
After a short break, your exclusive Venice tour continues inside St. Mark’s Basilica, one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture in Western Europe. With the church closed to the public, you’ll step inside in near silence, greeted by the shimmering gold of over 8,000 square meters of mosaics, softly illuminated in the evening glow. This rare after-hours access creates a peaceful and reverent atmosphere that allows you to fully appreciate the spiritual and artistic grandeur of the basilica.
Admire the famous Pala d’Oro, a jewel-encrusted altarpiece that has survived centuries of upheaval, and listen as your guide recounts its fascinating journey through history. Then, descend into the crypt below the church, traditionally believed to house the remains of St. Mark himself. Few visitors get to see this hidden chamber, making it one of the most memorable moments of your evening in Venice.
Whether you're an art lover, history enthusiast, or simply seeking a deeper connection with the spirit of Venice, this after-hours St. Mark’s Basilica and Doge’s Palace tour provides an unforgettable experience. With small group sizes and passionate expert guides, you’ll see these iconic landmarks in a new light—quiet, majestic, and rich with centuries of Venetian legacy.
