Full description
Seville Cathedral was conceived with the ambition of becoming one of the largest religious temples in the world. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and recognized as a Property of Outstanding Universal Value in 2010, it is today one of the most representative monuments of the city and a symbol of its historical and artistic splendor.
Its construction was carried out after the demolition of the old Great Mosque of Seville. Two fundamental elements of that original building are still preserved: the minaret, now known as La Giralda, and the Patio de los Naranjos, a space that keeps alive the memory of the city’s Islamic past. The complex is located next to the Archivo de Indias, the Royal Alcázar, and the famous Santa Cruz Quarter, forming one of the most remarkable historic areas of Seville.
For more than 150 years, Christians used the old mosque as a place of worship. It was not until 1401 that the cathedral chapter decided to build a new temple that would reflect the greatness of Seville. Tradition says that the canons wanted to construct a church so grand that those who saw it finished would think them mad. The works extended until 1506, giving shape to a majestic Gothic temple.
During the Renaissance, annexes such as the Main Sacristy, the Chapter Hall, and the Royal Chapel were added and rebuilt. It was also in this period that the upper section of La Giralda was completed by Hernán Ruiz, reaching 104 meters in height. This masterpiece became Seville’s emblem and a visible landmark from almost anywhere in the city.
Inside the Cathedral lie treasures of immense historical and artistic value, including the remains of Christopher Columbus and the largest altarpiece in the Christian world. The visit can be completed with a walk through the Patio de los Naranjos and, for the most curious, by climbing to the top of La Giralda to enjoy breathtaking views of the city.
