Nowadays, it is a historical district of Kraków, but from the 14th to 19th century, it was an independent city. At the end of the 15th century, Jews were transferred from Kraków to Kazimierz, where they built many synagogues, schools and houses over the years. The centre of Jewish culture was Szeroka street. Where you can see The Old Synagogue, The Remuh Synagogue and Cemetery, The Great Mikveh and Helana Rubinstein’s house. Close to the Jewish part, there was also a Christian part of Kazimierz, where the Market Square (Plac Wolnica), a town hall and The Corpus Christi Basilica are located. Today, Kazimierz carries not only educational value, but it is also a charming district full of small cafes and eateries, as well as great place to enjoy Krakow’s nightlife.
