Discover the story of Frederick Douglass and his time in Dublin in 1845, between lectures, political activism and historic encounters.
This walking tour commemorates Frederick Douglass's visit to Dublin between 1845 and 1846, shortly after his escape from slavery in the United States. During the four months he spent in the city, he published his autobiography, delivered lectures and met with Irish political activists such as Daniel O'Connell.
The route passes through places connected to this period of his life, including the former Rotunda Meeting Rooms, now the Ambassador Theatre, the site of the former Music Hall on Abbey Street, the Daniel O'Connell statue and home, the National Gallery of Ireland, the Mansion House and the Friends' Meeting Rooms on Eustace Street.
Since the tour runs in small groups, the experience stays intimate, allowing the guide to go deeper into how Irish poverty and famine conditions of the time influenced Douglass's thinking.
