Full description The capital and largest city of Finland. The visit includes the main attractions: Temppeliaukio is a large Lutheran church, whose main characteristic is its rock carving. Its circular layout has a truly beautiful and breathtaking interior, also notable for its astonishing acoustics. Senate Square: an esplanade that houses, at its northern end, another important church, in this case the Lutheran Cathedral of Helsinki, a neoclassical building, and the nearby Orthodox Uspenski Cathedral, considered one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in Western Europe. Also located in this square, but on the eastern side, is the State Council Palace (1822), from which its name derives, as it was the seat of the Finnish Senate until 1907. Opposite is the University of Helsinki building. The monument to the composer J. Sibelius, designed by sculptor Eila Hiltunen, is composed of hundreds of steel tubes that give it a rather distinctive appearance. The old town dates back to the Middle Ages, and most of its buildings are made of wood. The first mention of Porvoo in a document dates back to the early 14th century. The town received the title of city in 1380, although, according to some sources, the official founding as a city may date back to 1346. Following the conquest of Finland by Russian forces in 1808 (ending Swedish rule of Finland), the town, along with the rest of the country, became part of the Grand Duchy of Finland (under Russian control) in 1809, in accordance with the Treaty of Fredrikshamn. The most popular places to visit in Porvoo are Old Porvoo and the beautiful cathedral, decorated with fascinating symbolism both inside and out. The most photogenic sight is undoubtedly the row of wooden warehouses along the riverbank. They are now red, but they were first painted this color at the end of the 18th century in honor of the King of Sweden, who was visiting Porvoo.
