Full description
Known as "The City of Jacaranda" the city of Pretoria (Tswane), has its streets lined with purple flowers every October and November, Pretoria has a gentler and slower pace than Johannesburg so there is an air of tranquility and peace. Stroll through majestic old buildings and fascinating museums, Voortrekker Monument; or stop to take a look at the residence of President Paul Kruger, our first President, visit the Government Building, home to the offices of the President of the State of the Republic.
Government Building:
The "Union Buildings" constitute the official seat of the South African government and also houses the offices of the President of the Republic. Although not in the center of Pretoria, the Government Building occupies the highest point of the city and is a National
Monument. The President's offices are on the left side and a flag is raised on the left side if the President is present. The building is surrounded by beautiful terraced gardens of native plants.
Within the green areas several monuments adorn the extensive gardens. From the bottom to the top, a large statue of General Louis Botha (Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa) on horseback dominates the lawn. Further up the terraces, the War Memorial honors the South African troops who died during World War I, as well as the Korean War. After the death of our beloved Nelson Mandela a 9 meter high statue is located in the garden area.
Church Square:
It is the historic center of the city of Pretoria and one of the longest urban thoroughfares in the world with a distance of 26 km from end to end. The city expanded around Church Square, at the intersection of Church Street and Paul Kruger Street. Its most prominent feature is the statue of Boer leader and President of the Republic of South Africa Paul Kruger in the center and statues of the four anonymous Boer citizensoldiers surround Kruger on a lower level. Valuable historical and architectural buildings surround the square: the Palace of Justice, the Old Capitol Theatre, the Lattice Chamber, Ou Raadsaal (Old Council Chamber) and the General Post Office, designed by John Cleland. The Palace of Justice was the scene of the most famous political trial in South Africa's history, the Rivonia Trial. During this, Nelson Mandela and a number of other prominent figures in the liberation struggle were charged with treason and subsequently
Kruger House:
The Pretoria residence of Boer leader and President of the Republic of South Africa, Paul Kruger. It was built in 1884 by architect Tom Claridge and builder Charles Clark. Milk, rather than water, was used to mix the cement from which the house was built as the
cement available was of poor quality. The house was also one of the first in Pretoria to be lighted by electricity and contains several of the original furnishings or items from the same historic period, plus some of the many gifts presented to Kruger and other memorabilia.
Another interesting feature of the dwelling are the two stone lions on the terrace, which were presented to President Kruger as a birthday gift on October 10, 1896 by mining magnate Barnato Barney.
The Voortrekker Monument:
The immense granite structure, built in honor of the Voortrekkers who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854, was designed by architect Gerard Moerdijk who had the idea of designing a monument "that would endure over a thousand years to if tell the story and meaning of "the great voyage" to their descendants." It can be seen from almost any location in the city, as it sits on a hill. Although Paul Kruger discussed the idea of building such a monument as early as 1888, the movement to actually build it only began in 1931. Between 1937 and 1938 the foundation stone was laid by three descendants of some of the Voortrekker JC leaders: Mrs. Muller (granddaughter of Andries Pretorius), Mrs. KF Ackerman (great granddaughter of Hendrik Potgieter) and Mrs. JC Preller (great granddaughter of Piet Retief) and finally inaugurated on December 16, 1949 by the then prime minister DF. Malan.
Once a year, at noon on December 16, a ray of sunlight enters through an opening in the dome and shines on the floor at the Cenotaph, projecting a disk of the sun to illuminate the engraved words, "WE ARE FOR YOU SOUTH AFRICA". These words are oriented skyward, and cannot be read by the visitor standing next to the Cenotaph.
