Full Description
We begin our journey early to the Peninsula Valdés Protected Natural Area, one of Patagonia's most iconic destinations and declared a World Heritage Site for its exceptional biodiversity. This unique site is home to one of the most important concentrations of marine and terrestrial fauna in the Southern Hemisphere, making it an ideal spot for nature and photography lovers.
On the first leg of the tour, we make a brief stop in El Desempeño, where you can pay admission to the protected area, an additional cost not included in the excursion. From there, we head to the Carlos Ameghino Isthmus, the narrowest point connecting the peninsula to the mainland. Here, we visit the Carlos Ameghino Interpretation Center, an educational space that provides geological, ecological, and faunal information about the region. Inside, the impressive skeleton of a whale stands out, and from the lookout point, you can enjoy a panoramic view that simultaneously encompasses the Nuevo Gulf and the San José Gulf, as well as Bird Island and the unique geographical features of the peninsula.
Next, we arrive at the town of Puerto Pirámides, the only inhabited settlement within the protected area. From this small, picturesque coastal town, those interested can embark on a whale-watching trip, a seasonal activity that runs from mid-June to mid-December. This open-sea experience, lasting approximately an hour and a half, allows for up-close observation of the imposing southern right whale, one of the most emblematic species of the region.
The itinerary continues to Caleta Valdés, a coastal stretch of natural and scenic beauty. Depending on the time of year, we make various stops at key points. First, we observe the sea entering the cove, where the spit of water that penetrates the peninsula creates a unique natural spectacle. We then stop at Punta Cantor, an area with strategic viewpoints from which elephant seals and sea lions can be observed year-round. This area also has a small restroom, restrooms, and interpretive trails that allow you to learn about the native flora. Later, season permitting, we visit a penguin colony located on a cliff, where between September and April, you can see pairs of Magellanic penguins nesting, thus completing direct contact with various species typical of the Patagonian ecosystem.
Depending on the season, the excursion can continue along two alternative routes within the Valdés Peninsula. The first option heads to Punta Norte, an area renowned for the presence of breeding colonies of elephant seals between September and December, and of sea lions between December and May. This place has become world-famous for the possibility, although not guaranteed, of observing orcas approaching the coast to feed through the stranding technique, an extraordinary behavior that makes this spot one of the most impressive natural settings on the planet.
The second tour option takes us through the southern stretch of the peninsula, from where you can see the Salinas Grande and Chica, geographical formations of great interest that can be seen from the route and stand out for their color contrasts and almost lunar appearance.
Throughout the day, terrestrial wildlife sightings are constant. Along the different sections of the tour, it is common to encounter guanacos, choiques, maras, Patagonian hares, gray foxes, armadillos, and other characteristic representatives of the steppe. Each encounter with these animals in their natural habitat reinforces the ecological value of this protected area and makes it an ideal destination for those seeking authentic and environmentally friendly experiences.
The excursion concludes with a return trip to your hotel after a full day of connection with nature and the biodiversity of one of the most fascinating environments in southern Argentina. Visiting the Valdés Peninsula is much more than a sightseeing tour: it's a deep immersion in the natural rhythms of Patagonia, an experience that leaves its mark and raises awareness about the importance of preserving these unique spaces
