Explore Josefov, Prague's historic Jewish Quarter in the Old Town, and discover its main synagogues, its ancient cemetery, and the customs, festivities and legends of this community. A 2-hour 30-minute guided visit in Spanish, with admission included to the quarter's most important sites.
This guided visit explores Josefov, Prague's Jewish Quarter in the Old Town, combining outdoor and indoor stops to learn about the history, customs and legends of this community. The tour begins at the Rudolfinum and, passing by the Museum of Decorative Arts, arrives at the Pinkas Synagogue, a Holocaust memorial where the names of nearly 80,000 Czech and Moravian Jews who fell victim to the Nazi regime are handwritten on the walls, and which also displays children's drawings from the Terezín concentration camp.
The itinerary continues through the Old Jewish Cemetery, one of the oldest in Europe, with graves dating back to the 15th century, and the seat of the Jevra kadisha. You'll also enter the Klaus Synagogue, learning about Jewish customs and traditions related to the life cycle and funerals. On the way to the Maisel Synagogue, you'll hear the legend of the Golem, a clay being created to help the neighbourhood's inhabitants. At the Maisel Synagogue, you'll discover historical facts about the Jewish community in Bohemia up to the 18th century.
The route also passes, from the outside, the Old-New Synagogue, one of Europe's oldest active Jewish houses of worship, and the old Jewish Town Hall, as well as the Franz Kafka monument and the Stolpersteine, or "stumbling stones", small memorials dedicated to Holocaust victims.
Crossing Paris Street, home to fashion boutiques, you'll reach the Spanish Synagogue, a striking Moorish Revival building where the exhibition on the history of the local Jewish community continues. The tour ends at Old Town Square.
