Hallstatt's rich history dates back over 7,000 years to the Neolithic Age, and the area has been continuously inhabited since then. The town's salt mining industry led to a first economic golden age around 800 BC, as evidenced by the large burial ground in the Hochtal, and the period between 800 and 400 BC is now known as the "Hallstatt Period." In 1997, Hallstatt and its surrounding area, the Salzkammergut, were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
