Stuttgart Private Walking Tour

Our tour begins at the Main Railway Station, an impressive complex constructed in the 1920s, complete with a 12-story tower crowned by the recognizable Mercedes-Benz logo, visible from a distance. Departing from the train station, we'll enter Königsstrasse (King's Street), a pedestrian shopping zone bordered by stunning palace grounds.

Our first stop is Palace Square, the largest square in the inner city, featuring the royal gardens. These gardens were renovated in 1977 for the State Garden Exhibit and again in 2006 for the World Cup Finals. Adorned with sculptures, fountains, and a picturesque lake adjacent to the New Palace dating back to the late 18th century, this square is a popular destination for recreation, sports, open-air concerts, and even Christmas markets.

Opposite the palace stands the Königsbau, a city palace commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm I, which has been cleverly transformed into a shopping mall. Directly across from the Königsbau, you'll notice Stuttgart's Art Museum, a striking glass structure housing an impressive collection of German modern art. In the evening, the museum offers a captivating light show.

Continuing our tour, we'll enter Schiller Square, named after Friedrich Schiller, the renowned German writer often regarded as the country's counterpart to Shakespeare. The statue of Schiller is one of the newer additions to the square, but its origins date back nearly a thousand years. This is where the city's first stone buildings were erected, including the Old Castle, an ancient fortification once surrounded by a moat. Other notable landmarks in the square include the Collegiate Church, the Gothic-style Fruchtkasten (Granary), and the Ministry of Justice. Many of the buildings in the square underwent significant renovations during the Renaissance and after World War II. Today, the square serves as a marketplace and hosts a Christmas market during the festive season.

Our next stop is the City Market Hall, adorned with beautiful murals on its facade. A few minutes away, we'll reach Karls Square, featuring a statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I on horseback. Behind the statue, two obelisks commemorate the Franco-Prussian War, symbolizing not only Germany's victory over France but also the nation's emergence as a united and modern state in the mid-19th century.
