Descrizione generale
The experience begins in the heart of Venice, at the world-renowned St. Mark’s Square. This open-air museum is the perfect setting for an introduction to Venetian history and architecture. Surrounded by elegant buildings and majestic structures, visitors can explore the historical context and significance of the splendid St. Mark’s Basilica and its neighboring landmarks, key symbols of the grandeur and influence of the former Republic of Venice.
Leaving the busy square behind, the guided walking tour leads into the quieter residential area of Castello. This charming and authentic neighborhood showcases the elegance of Venice from a local perspective, offering a more peaceful and intimate atmosphere away from the crowds. It’s an ideal opportunity to immerse yourself in the true essence of Venetian life.
Along the way, the tour passes through iconic locations such as Campo Santa Maria Formosa, one of the largest squares in Venice, named in honor of the Virgin Mary's visitation. Next is Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo, home to the grand church of the same name, where numerous Doges of Venice are buried. In the same square stands the equestrian monument to Bartolomeo Colleoni, a notable Italian mercenary captain whose legacy is immortalized in bronze.
The itinerary also includes a stop by the former residence of Marco Polo, the legendary Venetian merchant and explorer whose travels helped shape the West’s perception of the East. Just a short walk away is the historic Malibran Theatre, one of the city’s oldest cultural venues, still active today.
Upon returning to St. Mark’s Square, the group enters the magnificent Doge’s Palace, once the seat of power for the Doge and his government. As you explore its opulent halls and chambers, you’ll be surrounded by stunning works of Renaissance art. Here, political decisions that influenced centuries of Venetian history were made. Among the many highlights is the world's largest oil painting by the Venetian master Tintoretto.
A visit to the Doge’s Palace includes walking across the iconic Bridge of Sighs, an enclosed limestone bridge connecting the palace to the city’s 16th-century prison complex. This architectural masterpiece has long inspired stories and legends, making it one of Venice’s most photographed landmarks.
The next stop is inside the extraordinary St. Mark’s Basilica. Once the Doge’s private chapel, it remains unmatched in Italy for its dazzling golden mosaics and intricately designed marble floors. The tour continues to the first-floor museum, where visitors can admire the famous bronze horses and enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of St. Mark’s Square from the basilica’s terrace.
After the walking portion of the tour ends at St. Mark’s Square, there is free time to enjoy lunch or continue exploring on your own (meal not included). This break offers the chance to further discover the vibrant atmosphere of the city center or to relax at one of the nearby cafés.
The final part of the package is a quintessential Venetian experience: a shared gondola ride. Meeting the group near the St. Mark’s post office, just behind the Correr Museum, you’ll embark on a 30-minute journey that begins on the Grand Canal and continues through some of Venice’s narrower, more tranquil waterways.
This gondola ride is the perfect way to end your day, offering a unique perspective of the city’s romantic charm, timeless architecture, and vibrant colors. Floating through the canals, you’ll witness why Venice is celebrated as one of the most enchanting cities in the world.
