Discover the iconic Buen Retiro Park, one of Spain's most renowned urban parks, accompanied by our expert guide.
This historic garden and public space is a real tourist jewel of the city, with architectural, sculptural and landscape ensembles dating from the 17th to the 21st century.
Its monuments include the monument to Alfonso XII, the majestic Palacio de Cristal, the charming Estanque Grande, the exquisite Parterre, the Puerta de Felipe IV, the Royal Astronomical Observatory and the beautiful Alcachofa fountain. We will also pay special attention to the charming hermitages of San Pelayo and San Isidoro, both in Romanesque style.
Our guide will explain how the park began to be used for recreational activities in 1767, under the approval of Charles III, and in 1868 it became the property of Madrid City Council. Although the French invasion damaged part of the original layout, there are still traces of the 17th and 18th centuries.
With a total of 118 hectares and a perimeter of 4.5 km, the Retiro Park stretches between the streets of Alcalá and O'Donnell to the north, the street of the poet Esteban Villegas to the south, Alfonso XII to the west and the avenue of Menéndez Pelayo to the east.
