Full description
Discover what life was like in Prague during the communist era: everyday life, shopping, travel, fashion and art from those years. The tour includes a visit to the nuclear bunker located beneath the Hotel Jalta, now a Cold War Museum.
The tour begins at the main entrance of the National Museum, from where you can see Wenceslas Square, the former seat of the Federal Assembly of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and what were once landmark shops of the era. You'll also see the memorial to Jan Palach and Jan Zajíc, martyrs of that period, and the monument to Alexander Dubček, the Czechoslovak reformist politician.
The route continues past buildings typical of Czech socialist architecture, known as SORELA, and along the street where the current headquarters of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia is located. You'll also see former headquarters of state companies emblematic of the era, learning how they operated and how everyday life was perceived by the local population, as well as sites linked to the Velvet Revolution and the years that followed the changes.
As the final stop of the tour, you'll visit the nuclear bunker located in Wenceslas Square, an underground defensive structure beneath the Hotel Jalta. The space, with its original thick walls, now houses the Cold War Museum, where you'll learn about the Warsaw Pact, the era's defense and missile-range systems, as well as the uniforms and weapons used at the time.
