Come and discover the innermost secrets of Milan's ancient fortification, Castello Sforzesco, on this guided walking tour. Florence is not the only cradle of the Renaissance in Italy: traces of the period can also be found all over Milan, and Castello Sforzesco is emblematic of this, thanks to restoration work begun in 1893 by Luca Beltrami to return this ancient fortress to its 15th-century glory.
The tour begins at the Torre del Filarete, also known as the Tower of Umberto I, rebuilt by Beltrami after the original collapsed, featuring the statue of St. Ambrose and the clock with its radiant sun. Passing through it leads to the Courtyard of Arms, with its rectangular layout, the left half built during Spanish rule and the right containing a series of artefacts, including stone sarcophagi.
The itinerary continues to the Museo d'Arte Antica, home to around 400 sculptures from monasteries, city walls and noble residences, including rooms richly decorated for the marriage between King Philip II of Spain and Mary Tudor, the Ducal Chapel commissioned by Galeazzo Maria Sforza, the Madonna Lia by Francesco Napoletano, a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci, and the Armoury.
The highlight of the tour is the Rondanini Pietà, Michelangelo's final work, completed at the age of 89 just days before his death, depicting the deposition of Jesus alongside his mother, Mary.
