Milan's Monumental Cemetery is one of the most characteristic and little-known places in the city, far from being a gloomy place, thanks to the special charm created by its sculptures, architectural works and natural environment. Considered a true open-air museum, it is one of Europe's top monumental cemeteries for its artistic value.
The tour, led by an expert guide, begins in front of the imposing main façade and includes a visit to the Famedio, or "Temple of Fame," a kind of pantheon where the city's most distinguished personalities are buried. From there, a walk along the central avenue that divides the cemetery into two symmetrical parts leads to the ossuary and the necropolis, before reaching the Cinerary Temple.
Along the way, you'll discover the stories of Milan's most important families, such as Campari, Treccani, Branca, Falk, Visconti and Riva, as well as the tombs of figures such as Alessandro Manzoni, Carlo Cattaneo and Giuseppe Verdi inside the Famedio, and learn about the works of renowned artists and architects such as Lucio Fontana, Giannino Castiglioni, Medardo Rosso and Adolfo Wildt, who turned the cemetery into a true open-air museum.
