You will take part in a wine and food tasting experience in Rome’s Pigneto neighborhood, an area known for its local atmosphere, nightlife, and connection with some of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s films. Throughout the activity, you will also discover a lesser-known side of the neighborhood linked to different periods of Rome’s history.
The visit will allow you to enter an underground space that was used at different times as a Roman quarry, an 18th-century wine cellar, and an air-raid shelter during the Second World War. For years, the existence of this place was preserved through the stories of the neighborhood’s elderly residents, who called it “ericovero,” a Roman dialect expression used to refer to the shelter.
While learning about the history of this space, you will enjoy a selection of Italian wines that may include sparkling, white, and red wine. Each selection will be accompanied by generous food tastings designed to create an experience equivalent to a full dinner.
Local food experts and sommeliers will accompany you throughout the activity and explain the characteristics of each wine, its history, and the most suitable food pairings. In this way, you will discover the art of pairing food and wine and learn about some of the differences and distinctive features of Italian cuisine and winemaking traditions.
